Please join us for the first in a series of University exhibits at the new Halo ArtSeed Community Gallery. Naturally Sublime, an exhibition featuring works by IU Southeast Fine Arts students Ashley Granger and Madison Jones, fulfills the final academic requirement for their BA degree. Naturally Sublime will exhibit a variety of ceramics, paintings and drawings.
The artists have been influenced and draw inspiration from nature. Jones paintings are representational and Grangers clay pieces are functional. Both artists prefer a muted palette of soft blues and greens.
The opening reception is free and open to the public on Friday, February 7th, 2020 from 5:30pm-7:30pm at ArtSeed. ArtSeed is located 1931 E. Spring Street in New Albany.

Please join us for our upcoming gallery exhibit. This month ArtSeed is featuring the works of Donna Stallard and Jodie Furbee in Implicit Objects.
Kentuckiana native and IUS graduate, Jodie Furbee is a traditional painter whose love of art is in the process, details and manipulation of the medium to create hyper-representational works that commandeer illusionistic light, luminosity, character and mood of the content.
Furbee’s current body of work focuses on local restaurants/breweries with interesting architecture that allow for optimal light, luminosity and shadows at night after a rain. This subject matter and Furbee’s painting style permits her to get lost in the details of creating a recognizable and believable illusion on canvas. Working this way allows Furbee to appropriate the character of the local architecture and create a mood with lights, colors and reflective surfaces.
Complementing the exterior paintings are the interior scenes of beers and cocktails with the reflective light and glow bouncing off the glass
table surfaces, utensils and illuminating through the iced liquid. The choice of subject matter for this body of work stems from Furbee’s personal application for the robust part of Louisville’s and Southern Indiana’s social culture of local food, breweries and bourbon and her desire to hold on to a moment in time.
New Albany native, Donna Stallard began her artistic journey at IUS where she attained her undergraduate degree and went on to get her MFA at the University of Dallas under renowned printmaker Juergen Strunk. After studying in Dallas, Stallard decided to return home to family and community. Stallard has come full circle and is a professor at IUS and a talented printmaker.
Instead of traditional 2-dimensional prints, Stallard transforms her prints into 3-dimensional sculptural installations. “As a print maker, we have coined the term ‘printstallations’, which I enjoy fabricating,” says Stallard. Her work comes from two distinct series: DNA and the Box (BX) Series. The DNA works explore how the immune system can malfunction and create havoc on the body’s ability to fight infection and repair itself. In the BX Series Stallard repurposes them to contain print editions that seamlessly confirm their original use or intention.

While large metro areas like Louisville and Indianapolis often get attention for their art scenes, Artists Creating is a spotlight on the often-ignored Southern Indiana art community.

Timothy Glasscock is a native of Kentucky and resident of New Albany. A musician and university professor by trade, he is obsessively up-to-date on current events and politically engaged. Dr. Glasscock is intimately involved with the community, directing an inclusive choral ensemble where students, faculty, staff, and local citizens come together to perform and create a community of creativity and mutual support. He, like so many others, was shocked and disheartened by the election of a president who causes so much division. Believing you cannot criticize others without first examining yourself, he wrote this book as a self-correction and personal meditation, aimed at helping others who, like him, struggled to cope with the aftermath of the 2016 election. A perennially positive individual, Glasscock divides his time between encouraging music students, engaging in community artistic endeavors, and working on personal projects he believes will strengthen the bonds between citizens and their elected government.

Kimara Wilhite developed a love of nature and the outdoors from a childhood spent camping with her Grandparents. Her Grandfather was an avid photographer of nature, and she inherited his passion. She is always inspired by dramatic light and capturing fleeting moments of nature.
Kimara loves to travel and finds great joy in capturing nature around the world. She is a member of the Professional Photographers of America, Equine Photographers Network, Louisville Visual Art Association, and Art Seed Gallery in New Albany, Indiana. Her work has been published in magazines and exhibited in numerous exhibitions throughout the United States.
Larry Beisler’s Inspiration for his stone sculptures comes mostly from nature. Carving is his greatest love. He has no preconceived idea as to what he is going to create but lets the stone tell him what it has to reveal.
Beisler says,” I believe that my love and desire to carve engages my conscious with my subconscious in a physical way that I really can’t explain. When I start carving a new stone I don’t usually have a subject or image in my mind. Sometimes the stone doesn’t connect with me ….so I put it aside and I put it in the back of my mind. Either through my conscious imagination or by way of my dreams the image or idea will start to emerge.”
Larry lives and creates near Elizabeth, Indiana. He is an award-winning artist and has exhibited widely in the Kentuckiana area. His work is included in numerous public and private collections and his large bas-relief sculpture, located in Corydon, Indiana, was part of the Millennium Project

Kleinhelter Gallery, 701 East 8th Street, New Albany, Indiana
Artist Ray Kleinhelter has long been inspired by the Ohio River, even refurbishing an old cruiser to be a floating studio. Kleinhelter’s paintings and drawings balance between description of the river and its shoreline, and a concern for abstract order. His gift for color and rhythmic composition make his work a vital addition to the long roll call of artists selecting the Ohio River Valley as their principal subject matter. This show is a part of AFLOAT: an Ohio River Way of Life, a year-long project that celebrates the life and work of Harlan Hubbard and the Ohio.
Kleinhelter Gallery is new to New Albany. The creation of this impressive gallery space from the decrepit shambles of a 100-plus-year-old building has been a labor of love — as well as a Herculean undertaking for Ray and his wife Gina, who is also an artist and their two adult children Grace and Zach.

Chelsea Harris is a recent graduate of Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she earned her B.F.A. of Fine Arts.
Whatever Works is a collection of paintings and drawings produced in the
tenuous period following Harris’s college graduation. Ranging from figures, plein-air landscapes, still lives, and pet portraits, these works are often connected only by the condition that they were completed during a period of life transition.
This exhibition chronicles the first two years since she completed her degree. Here, Harris offers an uninhibited view of whatever works she was able to produce, while faced with the challenge of entirely self-determined studio practice. ” The Only Rule is Work”
Chelsea Harris is currently serving as the Youth and Family Program Assistant at the Speed Art Museum and studio assistant to a painter, Gaela Erwin. Harris has been selected to serve as the May 2019 Artist in Residence for COLLIDER, the South Central Regional Library’s artist-in-residence program.

Chew on This is a program designed by Indiana Humanities to use the power of food and drink as a convener of people and catalyst for conversation to inspire thoughtful discussion on engaging topics. The topic for this program is What Divides Us?

Pints & Union, our host for the evening seeks to put conversation and education back into the pub experience. Their mission, decor, and daily operation is aimed at creating the traditional public house that is a neighborhood gathering spot and nerve center of the community
Facilitator, Roger Baylor, leveraged a philosophy degree from IUS into an offbeat and successful service industry career. He learned that a bartender is the ultimate orchestra conductor, traffic cop, and facilitator in the community. Sometimes controversial, Roger has been instrumental in starting the conversation surrounding community issues. Roger is a writer for Food and Dining Magazine, LEO, New Albany Tribune, and NA Confidential.

Home and Family are important words with very specific definitions, but BA painter Lee Vest and BA printmaker Edwin Breton explore the meaning of home and family beyond what can be found in a dictionary. In a series of oil paintings, drawings, and lithographs, Edwin and Lee show the audience what these concepts mean to them. These pieces attempt to impart the feeling of comfort one gets from being at home, and by the people we share spaces with.

Please join us for our upcoming gallery exhibits. This month ArtSeed is featuring two exhibits, The Main Gallery will feature the work of Southern Indiana Painter, Dru Pilmer. The Sun Gallery will feature the work of Edwin Breton and Lee Vest both graduating BA students at Indiana University Southeast.
Dru is a Contemporary Expressionistic Abstract acrylic painter. Born in Rhode Island, raised in Mississippi, and now calls the Greater Louisville area her home. Her work as a voice teacher and former work as a professional actor/dancer, informs the improvisational approach she takes in her paintings, which are often described as energetic and bold.
Her work, studies the color, emotions, and movement of energy that pulsates in the natural world. Sgraffito marks, made by scraping through wet paint, are woven into the images and are integral to her expression. These marks serve to remind the viewer that something is always happening in the physical energy fields of the painting; and between the viewer and the art when they occupy the same space. Her aim is that the feeling of improvisation and movement translated into color and form reaches the viewer, evoking emotion and something of the greater mysteries of existence, human struggles, and hope.

Please join us for our upcoming gallery exhibit. Meet Wendi Smith and Evelyn Fried our new artists, and enjoy their unique styles and approaches to working with found objects inside and outside of the box.
Both artists live and work in Corydon Indiana a short walk from the others studio. While Wendi has lived in Corydon for over 30 yrs., Evelyn and her husband, who is also an artist, are relative new comers.
Wendi Smith’s work has been exhibited regionally for over thirty years. She has been a member of local co-ops Zephyr and Pyro Gallery, and a supporter of the local arts scene. Exhibit credits include Four Star Gallery in Indianapolis, the Carnegie for the Arts in Cincinnati and Zephyr Gallery in Louisville. She has taught fine arts at Bellarmine University and Indiana University Southeast (IUS).
There are two main themes that recur in any of the work that Smith does. The first is ritual and ritual objects, which are fascinating visual subjects for her. She finds that universal work has a basis in ritual, either in execution or interpretation. The second idea is that Nature and the natural world are the subjects that matter most, not only because they provide so much of the beauty and wonder of our existence, but also because we abuse or ignore them at our peril.
Her work deals with the adaptation of ritual objects to natural subjects. The presented work is inspired by fetish objects, created from found natural elements and simple threads and beads. Each fetish is housed in a box, on which the object is portrayed.
Conversely, Evelyn Fried considers herself a hunter-gatherer by nature. Her works include pieces of this and that, each whispering a special something to her. Likewise, collage has always fascinated her, pieces of this and that, coming together to start anew. She considers her work a 3D collage, a means to give new life and new meaning to the pieces that she has collected along the way. It is playful and a little bit more.

Ashton Beaulieu,
Author and Illustrator
Ashton Beaulieu is a 28-year-old artist who has autism and hyperacusis. She lives in Charlestown, Indiana with her mother, stepfather and her cats, Cleo and Sheba. She volunteers at JB Ogle Animal Shelter in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Ashton is and intern at ArtSeed in New Albany, Indiana and works at Rauch Industries in New Albany, Indiana.
In 2016, she began work on her book Ashton’s Life With Cats at ArtSeed
She was able to communicate perfectly when she spoke about and drew her cats. Julie Schweitzer, ArtSeed Director, and Ashton’s life assistant, Terry Branham suggested that she write and illustrate a book about her life with her cats.
Later that year, Terry and Julie wrote an Indiana Arts Commissions Individual Artists Grant for artists with disabilities on behalf of Ashton to get her book published. Ashton received the grant and worked with ArtSeed and the design department at Indiana University Southeast to design and puiblish the book

ArtSeed, Inc has developed a collaborative project, Sew IN Quilt and Fiber Biennial, with The City of Albany, Schmitt Furniture, Indiana University Southeast, Purdue Polytechnic, local galleries, nonprofits, historic sites, and businesses to create the SewIN Quilt and Fiber Biennial. It is free and open to the public!
We will host a Saturday Trolley Hop on December 8 and January 12 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Fiber exhibits, lectures, festivals, and workshops will be scheduled throughout the run of the exhibits.
The Quilts and Fiber artworks have been created by 20 national and international artists and will be displayed at 18 locations around the city of New Albany, Indiana. The city-wide exhibits will explore the traditional and contemporary roles that fiber plays in our society from a domestic art to a contemporary art form. Exhibits will include museum quality traditional historic quilts, contemporary quilts with a social message, and fiber used as a creative medium.
Walking maps will be available at ArtSeed and all host site locations. Trolleys will pickup and drop off at all locations. Suggested free parking in the New Albany City parking garage.

Please join us for our new gallery exhibit. Meet Brian Jones and Brian Somerville, our new artists, and enjoy their unique styles and approaches.
Brian H. Jones, retired professor, taught at Indiana University Southeast for thirty-six years. He received his Bachelors of Fine Arts from Indiana University Bloomington, and received his Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Cincinnati. Jones has an extensive, international exhibition record nationall and internationally. He has participated in over fifteen artist fellowships, and served on many non-profit boards. In Brians statement he says, “This group of prints, some older and some newer, represents my journey and my responses to the natural world around me, especially now living in the middle of a forest. From older representational images to newer abstract images, that journey has and remains rewarding and enlightening. My inspiration in nature, it is now my principal teacher and I try to open my whole being to what it has to say.”
Brian Somerville is a sculptor who received his Bachelors of Fine Arts from the University of Evansville, and received his Masters of Fine Arts from Florida Atlantic University. Somerville now works out of his studio in Burns, Tennessee where he creates what he calls his “beasts.” “I sculpt beasts.” He says, “Layered with humor and personal symbolism, my creatures explore human relationships and the beast within us all.” Inspired by his experience in set design and themed construction; Somerville creates these art pieces by sculpting out of solid clay, then hollowing them out, carving intricate details, and adding mixed media additions. Before firing his “beasts,” he often spends weeks on the complex carvings. His intention is to “challenge the boundaries of an artistic experience.”

Artseed is pleased to announce our Annual Intern and Student Exhibit. The artist internship program focuses on teaching ArtSeed artists interested in learning the business side of art. Our interns collectively manage exhibit installations, events, education programs, media, and press. This allows them to develop relationships that serve them as professional artists.
Student Exhibit
Each year art educators from New Albany/Floyd County Middle and High Schools select artwork to be entered in an exhibit at the Carnegie Center for Art and History. The student awards are selected by a panel of independent artists and former art educators. The cash awards are provided by The Art Awards Fund. The Art Awards Fund is made possible through donations from local business, individuals and educators.
The works featured on the Platform 22 Popup Galleries are the 2- D Best of Show Award winners from the 6 – 12 grade, 2-D First Place Award winners 10-12 grade, and the 2018 Indiana 9th Congressional District Art Competition Winner.
All of the works will be on display throughout Floyd County Parks for the next year. All of the 2-D and 3-D original award-winning artworks will be on exhibit at ArtSeed Gallery August 10 – 31, 2018.

The newest library will be installed in Allison Brook Park in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Thursday, August 9 at 7:00 p.m. , St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in New Albany will be hosting a workshop entitled “Where is God When it Hurts.” The workshop will be held in the gallery exhibit of local artist, Rachael Bailey. Rachael used her art to work through her feelings of grief and loss during a difficult time in her life. The show titled “Our Distance”, expresses the feelings we all share when the ones we love are no longer beside us.
Presenters include Fr. Rick Kautz of St. Paul’s; Amy Baxley, faculty member at Mid-America College of Funeral Service; and the artist. Using art as a jumping off point, the panel will facilitate a discussion on finding God in the midst of loss. The event will be in the Parlor of the Parish House, 1015 E. Floyd County Commissioners and Art Seed will be unveiling the Platform 22 Popup Galleries, featuring the award winning artwork of New Albany/Floyd County Students,The Schmitt Furniture Little Free Library, created by ArtSeed interns and the Stepping Stone project, created on Duke Energy day by local students!
The new park has a playground, a large shelter house, a stage theater, 3/4 mile walking track, and the Romeo Langford Basketball Court. The park is located at 4400 Lewis Endres Parkway, New Albany, Indiana.

ArtSeed, in collaboration with Indiana University Southeast is pleased to host the first in a series of exhibits by IUS students. Please join us for this fabulous exhibit and to welcome Rachel into the arts community.
Rachel Olson is a graduating Indiana University Southeast Bachelor of Arts student. Her work features pastel drawings, a cyanotype textile and screen prints.Rachels exploration is abstracted and photographic in nature.
She is inspired by the flow of nature, and her work spans multiple disciplines; from printmaking to drawing. Her intention is not to create representational art, but to abstract themes found in nature.
Her first degree is in psychology and has a heavy influence on the process of her work. Her compositions are spontaneous and a reflection of her thought process. She explores and experiments with layered surfaces that create a variety of patterns emulating the constant change, growth, decay, and regeneration found in nature.

The I.M.A.G.I.N.E. Peace Now exhibition is organized by Boris Bally, featuring decommissioned guns transformed into art objects by artists from the United States and five other countries. Bally brings together like-minded artists from around the world to make a powerful statement about gun violence in America and artistic expressions of peace. I.M.A.G.I.N.E. PEACE NOW constructs a theoretical portrait of violence — calling on themes of greed, machismo, death, systematic oppression, irony, and beauty. Each artist’s interpretation of the gun as an object is insight-fully represented.

A Little Free Library is a “take a book, return a book” free book exchange; however, the Harmony Park Little Free Library will hold music instead of books! Visitors are encouraged to bring Cd’s, tapes, music books, or sheet music to be placed in the little free library.

David Imbrogno: One Hundred Days Project Performance
As part of the ArtSeed city wide exhibit program, we are collaborating with Louisville Photo Biennial www.louisvillephotobiennial.com, Brick Street Studios, and Jeffersonville Public Library to produce a series of exhibits and programming throughout Clark and Floyd Counties. The first in a series of exhibits features renowned local artists, David Becker, David Imbrogno, and David Modica. These artists are the featured exhibit at the new ArtSeed Gallery.
David Becker, Born in Louisville, KY in 1960 , was inspired at a young age by a love of the outdoors and a world as seen through the pages of National Geographic. His hope is that these found images will show both the beauty and fragileness of our environmental and societal surroundings. Becker says “Art is an act of discovery. Finding perspectives that evoke an emotional response is what drives my exploration. As a photographer I work hard to make images that freeze both time and space. Working with both color and monotone images I use space, negative space, shapes, line, tonality or color as the primary object of the image”.
David Imbrogno, former director of Bernheim Forest, artist and naturalist. His photographs are an exploration in noticing, and focusing on the natural world using photo essays, observations, photo/word poems and some random thoughts. David’s exhibit and lecture will be based on the One Hundred Days Project. “This year I am making a commitment to chronicle these mini-journeys with one hundred unique stories and photographs, from one hundred different days, all from my own little home.
Join me in this exploration of staying put, being who you are, and perhaps most importantly, being where you are” said Imbrogno.
David Modica expresses his personal vision in black and white film and prints in a traditional darkroom. He enjoys capturing places and buildings of historical significance as well as the urban landscape.
Modica’s personal work tends to be thematic and project-based. He enjoys capturing places and buildings of historical significance as well as the urban landscape. The work in the exhibit was inspired by a recent trip to Modica, Sicily.

Kimberly Carroll Raber is a trained stone sculptor and photographer. Consequently her photographs employ more than one view in her creative process. For this photography exhibit, Raber juxtaposes portraits of artists, teachers, and friends with images that reflect their passion. Stone Carvers, Weavers, Dancers, and yoga are just few of the areas that her images explore.
The exhibit will also feature images from Raber’s personal pilgrimage in 2016 on the Camino de Santiago trail in Spain. Raber will be speaking about her journey of discovery and how it has affected her work and life at a lecture on October 5 from 6-7:00 pm at Brick Street Studio.

Darlington Pairs Album Release Party: October 14, 7-10pm
As part of the ArtSeed city wide exhibit program, we are collaborating with Louisville Photo Biennial www.louisvillephotobiennial.com, Brick Street Studios, and Jeffersonville Public Library to produce a series of exhibits and programming throughout Clark and Floyd Counties.
Darlington Pairs is a New Albany based Indie Rock group specializing in original music and other cool things. The music video for their first single, “Low,” is featured on their upcoming album, “Caravan,”. There will be an album release party at ArtSeed October 14, 2017 from 7-10 pm.
ArtSeed Director, Julie Schweitzer saw the video and was immediately captured by the theme of growth, which is the mission of ArtSeed. The video will be featured on screens throughout the photo biennial exhibit, “DAVID”, at ArtSeed. Later members of the band will join with David Scopelliti and friends for a backyard concert.
Cliffy Madden, the mastermind behind the video, had this to say: “The overall theme of Low is about growing, and we wanted the video to mesmerize the viewer as you watch plants and flowers grow before your eyes. I’ve always loved tape and how unreliable it can be, randomly misbehaving in the coolest ways. I used that as my inspiration when creating all the warpiness and glitching throughout. There’s a repeating line in the song, ‘Throw a little love my way,’ which made me want to use animations conveying love in a unique way.”
The album, “Caravan,” was recorded at Goldsmith Studios in Louisville, and mixed and mastered by Skyler Bready and Cliffy Madden at Domo House Studios.
Darlington Pairs hopes to see you there, as well as at their upcoming Album Release Show on October 14th!
